What is Body Mass Index?

A Body Mass Index (BMI) is an easy and convenient way to determine whether you are overweight, obese, underweight, or healthy in terms of weight. It depends on height and weight and is standardized for both men and women. The BMI is an approximate measure based on an overall average - if you have a large frame and are well-built, your BMI may be higher than an average person, but within the healthy range.

How BMI is useful?

You can use your BMI score to evaluate risk factors for certain diseases and illnesses. The higher your BMI score, the higher your risk for ailments like high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and some types of cancer. How to Calculate BMI using the formulae?

To calculate the BMI, we need mainly two parameters from a person. First is the body weight of a person & total height of a person.

  • Just need to divide the weight of a person by the square of his height.
  • Once we get the body weight of a person in kilograms & total height of a person in meters, then we can apply the formula to calculate BMI.

The formula of BMI = (Body Weight) / (Body Height)2

Here, weight is measured in kg & height is measured in meters.

  • If a person wants to calculate BMI using imperial units, then we need the body weight of a person in pounds & total height of a person in inches. Then we can apply the formula to calculate BMI using imperial units.

BMI Formula = (Weight in Pounds ⨰ 703) / (Height in Inches)²

  • Once we get the BMI, we can assess the health of a person & if the value of BMI is very high then it is recommended to consult a doctor.

Solved Example of BMI Calculation using Age

Example: If a person has a body weight of 85kg & body height of a person is 1.66m. Then what is the body mass index of a person?

Solution: Firstly, we will check what is given in the above example.

That is weight = 85kg & height = 1.66m

Now, to calculate the body mass index,

Formula of BMI = (Body Weight) / (Body Height)²

= (85) / (1.66)² = (85) / (2.75)

= 30.90

By referring to the BMI chart, we can say that BMI of this person lies between overweight & obese.
